As parents, we all want our children to be successful in life.
We want them to read and write and daydream and imagine, and go on to be successful little humans.
What happens if your child seems to be lacking in one of these departments? Getting a library card and making it part of your routine to select age appropriate books and read them together on a weekly basis. Adding fifteen minutes of reading out loud daily can greatly improve your child’s reading skills.
There are also some programs on the market right now that are designed to help your child understand and learn to read.
Do they really work?
What is the catch?
Here are my thoughts on a popular one that is on the market these days that was created by a mom!
What is Reading Head Start Program?
This Reading Head Start Program is a digital product that claims to teach children between the ages of two and nine how to read. It promises success through fifteen minutes of practice, three times per week.
How Does Reading Head Start Work?
Reading Head Start was created by author Sarah Shepard. She is an english teacher with twelve years of teaching experience. She is a mother of three and claims that she started the program after one of her sons came home with a report card that said he was struggling in english class.
The method that Sarah uses in the program is essentially top secret unless you buy the package. She claims that it is a reading method that “the education system does not want you to know” and she is sharing it all inside. Sarah also claims that the method is “scientifically verified” and guaranteed to have your child reading at least two levels above their current age and grade.
In the beginning video presentation [watch here], it is stated that the Reading Head Start program can reverse Dyslexia as well as prevent it in your child.
Is this true? I really don’t know.
Dyslexia is a very complicated disorder, and I believe that it would take a medical and emotional support team to properly diagnose and treat it properly. I do think, however, that the Reading Head Start program could be a supported learning activity added to a treatment plan of those children with Dyslexia.
The program itself works on specific areas that are required for reading and language development like:
The program is done mostly on the computer, and does require a fair amount of parent support. Along with the program for your child, you will get what is essentially a “teaching guide” to properly assist your child in their learning journey.
Not Just for Reading
Yes, the Reading Head Start program does claim to teach your child how to read, but it also shares a few more perks if you follow the program correctly:
- Helps improve your child’s social skills
- Teaches that learning can be fun, and captivating
- You will learn how to improve your child language, vocabulary, and communication skills
- Boosts your child’s self-esteem and confidence
- Improve your child’s brain development process to optimum levels

What Parents Are Saying About Reading Head Start
My 2 year old son absolutely goes mental for Reading Head Start! He’s actually choosing the members area over television and its the first thing he wants to do when he wakes up after his nap. No word of a lie but I absolutely get why. If I was his age again, I’d love it too! Just wanted to send out my quick thanks!” *Disclaimer: Individual results may vary. – Carol Ruby
My son Jake ABSOLUTELY LOVES Reading Head Start!!! I’ve tried a few reading programs in the past and he’s quickly lost interest in all of them. Reading Head Start has been so fantastic because you guys are always adding new content to engage him. He’s constantly asking to log on and see what’s new. Whats made all the difference is that you actually have made this as much about parents as you have the kids. You’ve shown me how to best teach my child and that’s empowering to say the least! Now I REALLY CANT WAIT to send him off to school and get back that first report card! This has been a blessing for our family.” *Disclaimer: Individual results may vary. – Jill K.
Hey Sarah, thanks for getting back to me! Yes Ellie has been doing fantastic with Reading Head Start. We just started level three on Tuesday and she’s excited to get going. She loves your system so much that I’m not sure what to do next once she completes level four. You should keep making more levels lol. This has easily been the best investment I’ve made for Ellie to date and a bunch of my friends all picked it up for their children too. I’ll keep you posted on her progress!” *Disclaimer: Individual results may vary. – Samantha W.
Although I do agree that children learning to read is a must have skill in life, I don’t think that you need this program in order to make that happen. I am also a big lover of holding a paperback book in my hands. I much prefer my children read actual books than reading off of a computer screen. In my opinion, children spend enough time on electronic devices these days, and should keep some things as they are meant to be – hence the term “curl up with a good book”.
For me, this program is a definite PASS
I do think that it can be a great learning tool for your child if they need it, and would be a great starting point before hiring expensive tutors etc. For our family, it just isn’t the right choice.
If you would like to try out Reading Head Start and decide for yourself – sign up for one month and it will only cost you $1.00.
Don’t forget to cancel your subscription though, as I said you will be automatically billed for the second month on your billing date.
