What is The Honest Company?
Founded in 2011 by actress Jessica Alba, The Honest Company was created when a search for safe and effective baby care products showed up with lacking results. The company’s mission is to provide organic, all-natural products for baby and family that are not only healthy for you but for the environment as well.
The Honest Company considers themselves a wellness company, not just a diaper company, and they are on a mission to empower people to live happy and healthy lives. They have really stepped up their product game over the years and now offer a wide range of products including: infant formula, a wide array of household cleaning products, bath and body care products for the whole family, prenatal vitamins, tampons, pads and even a newly added beauty products section that includes makeup, facial care lotions and SPF!
This all sounds great, but are their products really as great as they claim to be?
Claim to Fame:
Obviously being a well known A-List actress has helped Jessica Alba get The Honest Company off of the ground. Jessica Alba is essentially one of the pioneer women who got started in entrepreneurship before it was all the craze and she has really stood behind her brand. She made herself relatable to every day parents by sharing the same struggles that we all as new moms go through.
Although I believe that her status sure did help The Honest Company get to where it is today, I really do love her back story and some of the products that are produced by the company, but more on products later.
Eco Friendly Products
What does this really mean?
The definition of “eco-friendly” is: Not harmful to the environment.
Before becoming a parent, I rarely cared about my footprint on the environment. I was totally guilty of throwing that can in the trash or not washing out that recyclable container, and it really didn’t phase me one bit. Fast-forward a few years and one of the most important things in my daily life is taking the extra step in ensuring that I do my part so that the world is a wonderful place for my children to thrive as they grow.
All-Natural Product Ingredients
We all want what is best for our babies, and being cautious about what we expose them to can really be exhausting. This is why I love products that have all natural ingredients that make some choices for us easy. The Honest Company diapers are made without latex, chlorine processing, fragrances or lotions. They do however contain wood pulp from sustainably managed forests to help keep them as natural as possible.
The Honest Company baby wipes are over 99% water and made with plant based materials. This ensures that they can be used on even the most sensitive of babies. They aren’t shy about letting you know what ingredients are in all of their products. Have a question? Just ask, they will surely answer if you use the website contact form.
One thing I will note is that if you are unsure about the amount of truth to their “all-natural” claim to fame is that Whole Foods does sell these products. What makes this notable is that there are 100+ body care ingredients that Whole Foods refuses to sell. Each product goes through a strict review process before being put on the shelves. You can rest assured, these products passed the test with flying colours.
What About the Lawsuit?
Yes, there have been some serious allegations against The Honest Company and their products in previous years. The first lawsuit was by a disgruntled customer who claimed that their sunscreen did not work, and another that the ingredients in their formula were not organic like they claimed to be. If you want to read more about the legal troubles of the company, you can do so here.
The Honest Company has paid out almost $2 million dollars to settle numerous legal disputes. They have also recalled a number of products to reevaluate their ingredients and re-release them with a new look and altered formulas. They do note that their wipes are made in Mexico and a number of other items are manufactured in other countries. Alba says that this is because they look for the best way to manufacture to the Honest standards at a lower cost.
Should you be concerned when choosing their products?
No, I don’t think so. The Honest Company is worth almost $2 billion dollars and still growing. They have never shied away from any of the bad publicity and always been quick to respond to any allegations regarding their products.
Subscription Boxes Right to Your Door!
If you are like us and savvy to ordering your diapers off of Amazon out of convenience, then you are not alone. Who wants to brave the stores when you can literally order from the comfort of your own home. Especially in the colder months!
The Honest Company does offer subscription boxes as well that are easily delivered to your home without all of the fuss. You can even get a $20 off coupon to use on your first box! One thing I will note is that you need to keep an eye on diaper sizing. If you don’t update the size you need as your baby grows, you will continue to get newborn sizes when you need size one. This can be a serious headache, especially when you are paying a little extra for these diapers.
Unsure if you will like their diapers?
The Honest Company Product Reviews!
Now I haven’t used ALL of The Honest Company products, but I have used enough of them to give you my honest opinion on the ones I have tried.
First thing to note is the SUPER CUTE patterns that they come in. I found these particularly adorable during the summer months when our baby wore not much more than a diaper. You can pick and choose the patterns that you like, and that really was the first reason that I bought these diapers.
I will say that I particularly did not like the fit of them, especially as Marlow grew. We did end up having quite a few leaks, even after sizing up. The sizing does seem to be true to other brands of diapers that we have tried in the past, so choosing the right size for your little one should be simple. Just a note: they do also make an overnight diaper if you feel that you are suffering too many leaks, you could always give these guys a go.
Lets talk about cost….
You will be definitely paying a premium for these diapers, but keep in mind that you are getting an eco-friendly all natural diaper.
Personally, I won’t be buying these diapers again. They just aren’t worth it for what the cost is for our family. I found we have much better luck and fit with these Happy Little Camper compostable diapers. If you are an Amazon buyer – I highly recommend trying those ones out before The Honest Company.
Can’t change a diaper without wipes, and The Honest Company claims that theirs are made with plant based materials and are 99%+ environmentally friendly. This makes them extra gentle on those little bums!
In all honesty, these wipes really do get the job done well. They are thick enough that you don’t get a finger blow out during a massive poo change, and have a soft quilted pattern to help eliminate diaper rash or skin sensitivities. The wipes are also infused with skin calming ingredients like chamomile, and cucumber yet they are fragrance free!
The cost is obviously more than your run of the mill Huggies bargain box, but they really do do a stellar job! We use them on bums, hands, faces, and I even use them as make up remover clothes if I am feeling extra tired and lazy.
I think these wipes are great, and they are one of my top favourite products from The Honest Company.
Diaper rashes can be a real bummer (hehe) and hard to get rid of if they aren’t caught soon enough. Diapers can be a damp breeding ground for raw tooshies, and you are going to want to stock up on some diaper rash cream.
My favourite all time diaper cream is Ihle’s Paste. It is super hard to find now a days, but every time I try a new cream, this is what I compare it to. If you haven’t tried Ihle’s Paste think of super thick white tar that stays put like super glue. Magic.
So does this cream live up to my standards?
It has 14% zinc, which is not too bad, I prefer a little higher percentage and find that the higher the zinc the better the cream stays on. Where I fell in love with this diaper rash cream is the fact that there is no scent. I can’t stand the smell of baby powder, pampers diapers, or any sort of scents on baby. I really only like light scents in a shampoo, so if you are a scent freak like I am, then give this one a go!
Nothing smells better than a fresh new little babe, right? Well nothing smells better than these baby washes! Our little Marlow absolutely loves bath time, and what we put on her skin is a big deal for us. Baby skin is thinner than our skin, and chemicals can absorb so much easier in to their perfect little bodies – which is why I am so health conscious when it comes to our products.
You can get this wash in four fragrances: sweet almond, sweet orange vanilla, dreamy lavender (my fav), and a fragrance free option.
They are made without sulfates, parabens, synthetic fragrances, and formaldehyde (super concerning ingredient, right?)
Inside these baby’s you will find aloe, coconut oil, jojoba, chamomile and other skin loving ingredients.
I definitely recommend giving these babies a go! The whole family can use them too!
Organic Body Oil
I only got to try this product because it was given to me as a gift. I was making my own whipped body butter and paused while I worked my way through this tub of goodness. This formula is made especially for new and expecting moms and they have hand picked the ingredients carefully. Tons of skin loving ingredients like organic cocoa butter, coconut and olive oils, and omega fatty acids create this easy to rub on balm.
It is designed to be hypoallergenic, and made without synthetic fragrances. Although I thought this balm felt great on my belly and thighs, I personally wouldn’t buy it for the price. I loved whipping up a batch of my home made butter, but thats just my personal preference. If you are looking for a good quality belly butter, then this one is great!
Those are all of the products from The Honest Company that I have personally tried myself. It would seem unfair for me to give a review of the rest of the products when I haven’t actually got my little hands on them. I have heard mixed reviews about the household cleaning products, I will say that those are a definite pass for us. The floor wipes are apparently not great, the window cleaner is apparently streaky, and the laundry soap is another miss for the line up. Apparently the stain remover does work fairly well, but we never have had a problem with stains around here.
I am actually quite excited to try the beauty line. As I am aging I am always looking for great skin care and beauty products that have less junk in them. I will have to report back soon if I try any, however, I will probably wait until the weather gets a little nicer and I am leaving the house more frequently. Yes, I like to hibernate in the winter…
